Why We Built Crayons N Controllers, and Who We're Building It For

A veteran-run gaming community open to everyone. Here's what we're building at CNC, why it matters, and why the best conversations sometimes happen with a headset on.

Every gaming community says they're different. Most of them are a Discord server, a logo and a handful of people who stopped showing up after the first month.

We didn't want to build that. We wanted to build a home.

Crayons N Controllers is a veteran-run gaming community, and it's open to everyone. That line is on our crest and we mean both halves of it. The people who started CNC come from a world where you take care of the person next to you, where you show up when you say you will, and where nobody gets left behind. We brought that into gaming because gaming needs more of it.

Why we started this

Let's be straight about it. We started CNC because we were tired.

Tired of giving our time to communities that forgot us the second we logged off. Tired of being a name on a member list and a number on a server count. Tired of showing up for raid night, week after week, for leadership that couldn't be bothered to show up themselves. Tired of watching good people drift away and realizing nobody even noticed they were gone.

We've all been there. You pour hours into a group. You help run their events, teach their new players, carry their squads. Then life gets heavy, you go quiet for a couple weeks, and not one person reaches out. No message. No "hey, you good?" Nothing. You come back and it's like you were never there.

That stings for anybody. For people who spent years in uniform, where the whole deal is that you don't leave your people behind, it hits different. A lot of us already know what it feels like to come home and have the world move on without you. We weren't going to keep accepting that from the places we went to unwind.

So we stopped waiting for somebody else to build the community we wanted, and we built it ourselves.

The rule is simple. Nobody here gets forgotten. If you're part of CNC, you matter. If you go quiet, somebody notices. If you need your squad, your squad shows up. That's not a slogan on a banner. It's the whole reason this place exists.

What we're building

Take a look around cncgaming.online and you'll see it isn't a template somebody bought and slapped a logo on. Every piece of it was built by hand, from the ground up, by people in this community.

Each game we play gets its own page, built specifically for that game. Not one generic layout copied five times. Diablo IV feels like Diablo IV. Dune: Awakening feels like Arrakis. We did that on purpose, because the jump from "I play this game" to "I play this game with these people" should feel natural.

We also kept it simple. A lot of game resource sites are insanely over complicated. You go looking for a build and end up lost in twelve menus, three popups and a video you didn't ask for. Our builds, guides and tier lists are meant to be read and used. Find what you need, get back in the game.

On top of that sits the community side: news and articles, a roster with callsigns, ops boards and squad joining so you can actually find people to run with tonight instead of scrolling a channel hoping somebody's online.

And we give credit. Every time. If we pull data from another creator, site or source, they get named. We are not a dishonorable community, and we're not going to build our house on somebody else's work without saying so.

Who we're looking for

If you're a veteran, active duty or a first responder, this place was built with you in mind. Sign in with Discord, fill out your card, and come find your people. You don't have to explain what you've carried to anyone here. Most of us already know.

If you're not any of those things, you're still welcome here. Full stop. Some of the best teammates we've ever had never wore a uniform. Military spouses, kids of first responders, nurses on night shift, the guy who just wants a solid squad that doesn't rage in voice chat. Anyone can join.

What we're really looking for is people. People who communicate. People who help the new player figure out their build instead of roasting them. People who show up for raid night. People who want to be part of something bigger than a win streak. People who remember the people they play with, because that's exactly what we were missing.

Our regular members are called Crayons. Yes, really. If you know, you know. If you don't, stick around. Somebody will tell you the story.

Why gaming matters more than people think

Here's the part we care about most.

For a lot of veterans and first responders, the job doesn't stay at work. You carry it home. And a lot of the people who carry the most are the least likely to sit across from someone and talk about it. Eye contact is hard. Formal settings feel like an interrogation. "How are you doing, really?" gets answered with "I'm good" every single time.

But put a headset on and something changes.

You're not face to face. You're side by side, looking at the same fight, working toward the same goal. There's a job to do, a boss to kill, a zone to hold. And somewhere in the quiet stretch between pulls, or on the long ride back to base in Arrakis, someone says something real. "Rough week." "Can't sleep again." "Today's the anniversary."

That's not an accident. It's easier to let your guard down when you're shoulder to shoulder instead of under a spotlight. A lot of us have had the most honest conversations of our lives at 1 a.m. over a game.

Gaming gives people structure when life feels loose. It gives them a team when they feel alone. It gives them small wins on days when the big ones aren't coming. And it gives them a reason to log in tomorrow, because the squad is counting on them.

We want CNC to be the place where those conversations are safe. Where you can drop the tough guy act for a minute and nobody makes it weird. Where somebody notices when you've gone quiet for a week and checks on you.

We're gamers, not therapists, and we'll never pretend otherwise. But we can be the people who listen, the people who point you toward real help when you need it, and the people who are still there on the next raid night.

If you're struggling right now, please reach out. Veterans can call 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line, or text 838255. Anyone in the U.S. can call or text 988, any time, day or night.

Built with time, sweat and a lot of late nights

When you click around this site, we hope you feel it. The hours that went into getting every page right. The arguments over colors and layouts at 2 a.m. The rebuilds when something wasn't good enough. The care that went into making a place people would actually want to call home.

This isn't a side project to us. It's the future of how we want gaming communities to work: honest, organized, welcoming and built on respect for the people in it.

We're just getting started, and we want you in on it from the beginning. And when you're here, you won't be forgotten.

Grab your controller. Grab your crayons. Come find your squad.
